SEGMENTS

Driftnet Vote / Linda Fasulo

Linda Fasulo reports on the upcoming United Nations vote on driftnet fishing. A US-sponsored resolution would ban driftnets more than one-and-one-half miles long by next June. Japan is sponsoring a competing measure that would allow driftnetting to continue while their impact is studied further. (02:07)

Would a Ban Work?

Steve talks with Steve Amen, producer of PBS's Frontline documentary "To the Last Fish." Amen says a UN ban on large driftnets probably wouldn't put an end to the practice, although it would reduce the market for fish caught by renegade countries. (04:21)

New England's Troubled Fishery / Anthony Brooks

Anthony Brooks of member station WBUR in Boston reports on the sharp decline in the once-abundant populations of groundfish off the New England coast. Fishermen blame the rise in predatory species, but conservationists say there are just too many boats in the water. (06:40)

Surfer Activists / Betsy Bayha

Betsy Bayha of member station KQED in San Francisco reports on the emergence of the 15,000-member Surfrider Foundation as a force in the protection of coastal waters. The group recently won a large clean-water settlement against two paper mills in northern California. (06:18)

Floating Sneakers / John Carroll

Commentator John Carroll tells the story of a recent maritime accident turned commercial opportunity. (01:56)
