SEGMENTS

Democrat, Republican or Green? / Steve Scott

Steve Scott reports from Sacramento on California's new environmentalist Green party. The party has recently signed up more than 80,000 voters to qualify for automatic ballot access in local and state elections. Party leaders admit they may not elect many of their own right away, but they do expect to pressure Democratic and Republican candidates to take more pro-environment stands. (05:19)

Not that Easy Being Green

Steve talks about the prospects for the new California Green party with social historian Morgan Kausser of the California Institute of Technology. Kausser says there hasn't been a truly successful alternative party in the US since the Republicans in the 1850’s, and that the California Greens face a tough challenge, whether they pursue a narrow environmental agenda or a broader social one. (04:01)

End to Sludge Dumping In Boston / Peter Thomson

Living on Earth's Peter Thomson visits with Paul Levy, who has headed up the first phase of the $6 billion cleanup of Boston Harbor, the nation's most polluted. The project has just passed its first milestone, shutting off the flow of treated sludge onto the floor of the harbor. From now on, the sludge will instead be turned into fertilizer. (05:37)

A Look Ahead

Reporters from around the country gaze into Living on Earth's crystal ball at the major environmental issues of 1992. (02:45)

Beware Environmental imperialism / Crocker Snow

Commentator Crocker Snow, Jr. says that the US should be wary of telling the rest of the world how to save itself. (02:29)
