Where Have All The Fishies Gone? Earth Summit Talks Bogged Down

Steve talks with Allan Peterson, of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, about the drop in fish stocks off Canada. Peterson says the changes in ocean temperature off Newfoundland could be consistent with theories of global warming, although it’s far too early to say if that is the cause. (03:02)

Earth Summit Talks Bogged Down

Steve talks with New York Times reporter Paul Lewis about the slow progress of environmental treaty negotiations at the United Nations. Several major treaties are supposed to be ready for the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in June. But with the negotiating deadline approaching, member countries are still haggling over fundamental details. (03:00)

Brazil Environment Minister Sacked / David Welna

NPR's David Welna reports on the firing of Brazil's outspoken environmental minister, Jose Lutzenberger. Lutzenberger had been highly critical of some policies of his boss, conservative President Fernando Collor, but had also been criticized by environmentalists for being disorganized. As the host of the upcoming Earth Summit, Brazil has been trying to polish up its environmental image. (04:26)
