SEGMENTS
Living on Earth Turns One
Steve marks the first anniversary of the program. As part of our birthday commemoration, we'll be looking back and ahead over the next few weeks at some of the stories we've covered over the last year. (00:45)
Ozone Recap
Steve surveys the past 12 months' worsening news on atmospheric ozone depletion, which Living on Earth covered extensively. (01:50)
New Ozone Research
/ David BaronDavid Baron of member station WBUR in Boston reports on an ongoing atmospheric ozone research project run out of a Maine airport. The project produced the data which led President Bush to recently speed up the country's phaseout of ozone-depleting chemicals. (05:38)
Environmental Justice Recap
Steve reviews the emergence over the last year of a national movement for environmental justice — forging links between traditional environmental and civil rights groups. (02:51)
Environmental Justice, Not Equity
Steve talks with Louisiana activist Pat Bryant about the environmental justice movement's emergence and the Federal government's recent response to the movement's concerns. An EPA report recently expressed concerns over issues of "environmental equity," but Bryant says that implies a need to merely redistribute the country's pollution, a position which Bryant says misses the point. (03:45)
Birthday Thanks
Steve says thanks to listeners and stations for making our first year a very successful one. (01:00)
Mini-Hydro Powers Public Radio
/ Steve CurwoodIn an encore presentation of a piece we ran a year ago, Steve visits a new public radio station in New York's Catskill Mountains that gets its electricity from the general manager's new mini-hydroelectric plant. (04:44)
