SEGMENTS
National Park Service Threatened
/ Jon GreenbergJon Greenberg reports on a new study which says the National Park Service is under-funded, overburdened and subject to the political whims of the White House and Congress. The report was commissioned by the Park Service itself on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. (04:25)
No More Parks
Steve talks with John Sawhill, president of the Nature Conservancy and a member of the 14-member panel which studied the National Park Service. Sawhill says the Park Service has been asked to manage too many parks with too little money. (03:23)
Massive Canadian Hydroelectric Plan in Danger
/ Carol OffSteve recaps our coverage of Hydro-Quebec's Great Whale project, which would flood thousands of square miles of Native homelands in northern Quebec. Over the past year native Cree Indians and Inuit brought their campaign against the dam system to the US, with increasing success. The CBC's Carol Off reports from Montreal on the political and economic ramifications of New York State's decision to cancel a multi-billion dollar contract with the Canadian utility. This package is part of Living on Earth's First Anniversary Series. (08:35)
Saying No to Hydro-Quebec: Economics, Not the Environment
Steve talks with Frank Murray, the Deputy Secretary for Energy and the Environment of New York State. Murray says Governor Mario Cuomo's decision to cancel his state's 20-year contract with Hydro-Quebec was based more on the changing economics of energy than on environmental considerations. (04:00)
