Utility Funds Better Forestry

Air Date: Week of

Peter talks with John W. Rowe, the Chairman of the New England Electric System, about the utility company's plan to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by the year 2000. The plan includes funding for an experimental program to replace clearcutting with selective cutting on a parcel of Malaysian forest. The theory is that saving trees that would otherwise be wasted will help reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
