SEGMENTS
New Green Marketing Guidelines
/ Laura KnoyLaura Knoy reports from Washington on the Federal government's new guidelines for "environmental" product claims. The voluntary guidelines are meant to help consumers and companies better navigate the sea of "green marketing," but some environmentalists say they don't go far enough. (05:00)
Feds Nix Salvaging in Coral Reef
/ Melissa ManciniMelissa Mancini reports from Miami on a Federal injunction barring a treasure hunter from blowing holes in a coral reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Sanctuary managers say the salvager's pressurized water method is damaging the fragile reef ecosystem. The salvager says he's actually helping to improve the habitat. (02:00)
New California Marine Santuary
/ Claire GreeneClaire Greene reports on the creation of what will soon be the nation's largest marine sanctuary, centered around California's Monterey Bay. The sanctuary will provide broad but not complete protection for the area, which is home to a wide array of marine wildlife and unique geologic features. The dedication of the sanctuary this fall will cap a 15-year effort, and may be a feather in the environmental cap of President Bush. (07:38)
Utility Funds Better Forestry
Peter talks with John W. Rowe, the Chairman of the New England Electric System, about the utility company's plan to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by the year 2000. The plan includes funding for an experimental program to replace clearcutting with selective cutting on a parcel of Malaysian forest. The theory is that saving trees that would otherwise be wasted will help reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. ()
