SEGMENTS
Preserving Biodiversity
Steve talks with biologist Walter Reid of the World Resources Institute about the treaty on biodiversity being prepared for the upcoming Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Reed says the treaty will likely say all the right things about the need to preserve the world's myriad species of plants and animals, but will probably do little to ensure their protection. (05:26)
Visiting the Tropical Forest Canopy
/ Bob CartyProducer Bob Carty travels to the top of the Costa Rican rain forest with tropical ecologist Tara McCarthy. McCarthy is a former nurse who found her new calling in the tropical treetops. (05:45)
New Temporate Canopy Research
/ Tom VerdeReporter Tom Verde visits the first permanent temperate forest walkway in the United States, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. While researchers from temperate countries are rushing to study the diminishing tropical forest canopy, the biologist who built the walkway is one of the few studying the canopies in their own backyards. (05:48)
Nature Strikes Back
/ Susan TrauschCommentary from Boston Globe columnist Susan Trausch. (02:50)
